Homeschool Memoirs - Field Trips

Today's theme is Field Trips. We have taken a ton of field trips throughout our years homeschooling. I thought I would list a few of the different ones we've taken. I also asked my children what their favorite field trip has been and I will share that, too.

Here is a list of some of the better field trips we've been on:

Apple Picking

Farm Tour - we've visited several farms including an organic dairy farm, a goat farm and more recently a pig farm!

Zoo - A trip to the zoo can become common place, however on our last zoo trip, I carried along the The Complete Zoo Adventure. This made looking at the animals more interesting. The book gives info about the animals similar to the plaques in front of the cages however from a Biblical Creation worldview. One of the best zoo trips we have taken was to a place called Hollywild where they have animals that have been in movies, TV shows and commercials. This was a lot of fun. They have one large enclosure where many different types of animals are kept and you ride a bus through this like an African Safari! Here we saw giraffes, buffalo, a watussi! Very neat experience!

Museums - One of our recent trips was to the High Museum of Art in Atlanta. Right now they are having exhibits from the Louvre in France. We were able to see the ancient exhibits where they had artifacts from Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia! This is the kind of stuff I LOVE! Our local county museum is also very well done. It does a great job of telling the history of the area with great hands-on features and it's free!

Homeschool Days - Various places have an annual homeschool day and they usually do an excellent job of making things interesting for the kids. One in particular that I remember fondly was at Stone Mountain in Atlanta.

I asked the boys what their favorite field trip that we'd ever taken was and they both said the trip to a water wheel-powered grist mill. Nathan loved it because the boys had played adventure on the creek banks there and that's the kind of stuff he loves. Evan enjoyed it because he had just read all about mills in his science book and was able to see what he'd read about in action. Now this was the most recent field trip we've taken, so it may just be that this is fresh in their minds and so, is their "favorite". But you never know! Here is a picture from this recent trip.

I did enjoy the High Museum, however I think my favorite field trip we've ever taken was to the Titanic exhibit. This is a traveling exhibit that came to Atlanta a year or so ago. History is my "thing"! I love to read and learn about the lives of the people that have brought us to where we are today. This is an AMAZING exhibit. You get a ticket with the name of an actual Titanic passenger. At the end, you can check your ticket to see if you were one of the survivors or not. We went with a group of about 15 people. All the boys in our group "died" and only 1 girl. She had a thrid class ticket. Oh it just brings it to life so much! They have an an actual panel from the hull of the ship that has been excavated and preserved. There is also a chunk of the hull that you can touch. They have on display a multitude of personal items, dishes, suitcases, jewlry, clothes and such that has been recovered from the bottom of the ocean. If you see this exhibit coming to your town, please take the opportunity to go. We did a three week unit study on the Titanic before going on this trip! It was AWESOME!

We love taking field trips and in some ways I wish we could do it more often. Although doing it less frequently makes it more special! Have fun with your field trips this year!!

Until next time,

~Linda~

I would love to have seen the Titanic exhibit! We did a Titanic unit study several years ago; I look forward to doing one again with my younger kids!

I love zoo trips as well. My husband had a business trip to San Diego this spring and the kids and I went along and spent the entire week at the San Diego zoo. It was exhausting but wonderful.
