French Toast Casserole... mmm...
Today we tried something new... French Toast Casserole...
One of the great things about this recipe is that I can start it the night before and in the morning just pop it in the oven. It also uses simple ingredients. I've seen these types of casseroles before that needed special ingredients, such as french bread, or instant vanilla pudding. I don't keep these types of things in the house. This recipe calls for regular old loaf bread. I used Dutch Colony Whole Wheat (that's my favorite). I cut the loaf in to squares (each slice cut into 6 pieces), and let it set on a towel to dry out some.
The recipe calls for 6 eggs and 3 cups of milk, but I felt that it needed a little more milk than that. I added about a half a cup more. Once I had the casserole assembled, I sprinkled the top with cinnamon and sugar.
In the morning I dotted the top with butter, cause butta' makes everything betta'!
On a distantly related note... once when I was cooking with one of my children who was in the "why??" stage of life, I was adding cheddar cheese to a recipe. Of course the child* asked why I was putting the cheese in there. I said, "Cheddar makes it better." Then the child started singing, "chedda' makes it betta' when you're feeling worse or deada'." Dontcha just love kids!
Anyhoo, back to the French Toast Casserole... the recipe says to bake for 45-50 minutes, but I thought it would be done in 30... nope! After calling the kids to breakfast and having the table ready, I cut into it to discover that it was still kinda runny. After many an "Aw maaaannn!", back into the oven it went. The house smells heavenly right now!
I guess you want to know about the taste... It's fabulous! If you like french toast, you'll love this recipe. It can make a hectic morning easier because you can just take it from the fridge and pop it in the oven while you get ready.
You should really try it!!
